The World Health Organization chief said he believed China would be able to bring the bird flu outbreak under control.
Lee Jong-wook, director-general of the WHO, also said his organization would not issue a travel alert against Asian countries hit by bird flu. People in the affected countries need not panic, Lee said at the Geneva head office of the world health body Tuesday (Feb. 3).
The WHO welcomed the resolute measures China was taking, Lee said.
In another development, Asia's bird flu crisis topped the agenda of a three-day emergency meeting which opened in Rome on Tuesday, after the human death toll in the outbreak rose to 12.
Health, food and animal experts from around the world are attending the meeting.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is hosting the meeting at its Rome headquarters. Also participating are the World Health Organization and the World Animal Health Organization.
The experts are aiming "to develop shared strategies for helping affected countries respond to the existing emergency and prevent future outbreaks of the disease," an FAO statement said.
