The former Dongshan District Government compound at Dongshankou has been converted into the Yuexiu District Library, which is set to open in the middle of this month. The existing Yuexiu Library on Panfu Road will become a branch of the new library.

Municipal and district governments have contributed RMB 23 million to build the new library, which provides 1,000 seats on six floors. This integrated library has a collection of about 200,000 volumes and is totally free.
The left side of the first floor of the new library contains a more than 300 square meter tastefully decorated book café, in which readers can browse books on display over a couple of drinks or surf the Internet on wireless equipment free of charge.

Dong Zhiqiang, curator of the library, said the new library is designed to deliver a comfortable reading experience and to foster a love for reading among the public.
The exhibition hall on the right side of the first floor will present calligraphic, painting and artwork shows from time to time. On the opening day of the library, three shows will be staged – a show of palm-leaf manuscripts from Shi Jingyi's collection, a show of works by renowned calligraphers and painters in Guangdong Province, and a show of Yixing purple clay artworks. The shows will be open for a month with free admission.
In addition to regular newspaper and magazine reading rooms and electronic reading rooms, the second floor also contains a special reading room for visually handicapped people. The third floor houses a children's amusement park. The fourth floor is an education library. The sixth floor contains several VIP research rooms.
